With the pine trees, streams and wild animals and those ‘lost in paradise’ views of Oostkapelle’s uninhabited part of the beach you feel you could actually be in Scotland!

Our favourite walk is in the picturesque Manteling nature reserve which lies behind the coast line of Oostkapelle (just after Domburg) and up until Vrouwenpolder ‘Oranjezon.’ The area has wooded and oceanfront landscapes with walking, bike and horse trails and sand dunes.
We start our 1 hour walk through the blue colour gates written ‘Overduin’, Vroonweg 11 Oostkapelle towards ‘ZeeCafe’ on Oostkapelle Beach.
Walk Map

Manteling Walk description
Buitenplaats Overduin, Vroonweg 11, Oostkapelle. The Overduin estate normally has a table selling fruit and veg at the entrance. When you enter the blue wooden gate walk straight ahead through the woods. Along the way you'll pass through a series of metal gates. You'll come to a canal partly covered to bridge the gap to the other side. You arrive at the sandy, grassy hills where smaller trees appear and wild horses may be roaming. Follow the trail of arrows indicating where you can walk. You continue to forget you are next to the beach and could actually be in Scotland when you see the tall pine trees and vantage points! Eventually you pass through the last gate and you arrive at the high plant covered dunes and those ‘lost in paradise’ views of Oostkapelle’s uninhabited part of the beach! We turn left to walk in the direction of Zeecafe (a good 20 minute walk with kids) to have a drink and snack with Adrian.
There are 4 ‘Buitenplaats’ old country estates situated in the Manteling. Roe and fallow deer, cows and horses and other animals roam about and fairytale looking oak trees huddle together, which were dwarfed into strange forms by felling during WW2. My children love climbing the little oak trees!
In the winter we throw sticks across the frozen canals which makes a whizzing sound!
Estate visit description
Buitenplaats Zeeduin and Overduin, Vroonweg, Oostkapelle are where the two white country estate houses of ‘Zeeduin’ and ‘Overduin’ are situated with their herd of fallow deer, orangery, allotments and outhouses. You can visit the grounds if you promise to stick to the designated paths and respect the privacy and tranquility of the owners!

More Manteling locations to explore:
Buitenplaats Westhove lies just after Domburg in Oostkapelle, where the Stayokay Hostel Domburg (Westhove Castle) and Terra Maris natural history museum with gift and coffee shop are situated in the old orangery. I bought some useful bird and tree identifier laminated posters here to spice up our Manteling visits! We like to bike through here on our way to and from Domburg More history: https://www.zeeuwseankers.nl/verhaal/kasteel-westhove, #kasteelwesthove, #terra-maris
Buitenplaats Berkenbosch Oostkapelle has an avenue of pretty over arching trees.
Natuurgebied Oranjezon, Vrouwenpolder is where you can get a map and pay to visit the entire nature park along the coast line and climb the 'uitkijktoren' lookout tower for panoramic views. There is car parking too. It is also where the kids favourite mini-farm restaurant is with outdoor playground called ‘Uitspanning Oranjezon.’ The footpath cuts through the manteling to Aloha Beach there too. I'll write about Aloha Beach in another blog!
In Zeeland 21 historic country estates ‘buitenplaats’ have been preserved, which in the past were usually inhabited by the elite. Some of the estates were demolished and villages were built in their place such as in Oostkapelle village and up the road in Aagtekerke (where Hof Hazenberg 'pluk tuin' flower farm is) that I know of. You can read more about them here: https://www.buitenplaatseninnederland.nl/zeeland.html

Thanks Jacq! I recommend and friends have stayed on the camping, in the cottages and yurts - one stayed above the historically furnished coach house with bedsteden! She loves horses! ‘Landgoed Twistvliet’ from 32Euro per night for a 2 person tent. There’s a camp fire to sit around eacH night, horse and coach rides, farm animals, beautiful nature and Zeeuwse black wooden houses and gardens, royal style toilet, shower, laundry, sink facilities (horse head taps!) and tree rope swings... and for the adventurous a Land Rover parcours for rally style drivers! The owner Nico is not a ‘still sitter’ as locals say ! Situated in the polders of Vrouwenpolder. Camping: https://www.heerlijkheidvandepolder.nl/.
